When do turkeys mate?

Wild turkeys typically mate in late winter or early spring, between February and April.

Here's why:

* Seasonal Cycles: Turkeys are sensitive to changes in daylight hours and temperature. As days grow longer and temperatures start to rise, their hormones shift, triggering mating behavior.

* Optimal Conditions: Spring is the ideal time for turkeys to mate because:

* Food Availability: Spring brings fresh vegetation, providing abundant food for both the male and female turkeys.

* Nesting: Females need time to find suitable nesting sites and prepare them before laying eggs.

* Young Survival: Hatchlings born in spring have the best chance of survival as they have plenty of time to grow and develop before the harsh winter months.

Important Note: Domesticated turkeys bred for meat production have different mating seasons, as farmers control their breeding cycles.
