How to Cook a Turkey in a Plastic Bag
Turkey often dries out in the oven during roasting. Cooking the turkey in a bag traps the moisture inside, keeping the meat juicy. Do not use any plastic bag for cooking a turkey. You must use a plastic roasting bag. These bags are made from a heat-resistant plastic which will not melt or burn in the oven. Look for plastic roasting bags in grocery stores near the aluminum foil.
Things You'll Need
- 2 tbsp. flour
- Knife
- Roasting pan
- Nylon tie included with bag
- Meat thermometer
Instructions
-
Remove giblets and neck from the thawed turkey.
-
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
Sprinkle flour inside the bag and shake bag to coat the inside.
-
Puncture the bag with a fork in several places to vent steam.
-
Place the plastic roasting bag into a roasting pan.
-
Insert the unstuffed turkey into the bag and loosely close the bag with the nylon tie.
-
Cook the turkey in the plastic roasting bag for 1 ½ to 2 ¼ hours for 8 to 12 lb. turkeys; 2 ¼ to 2 ¾ hours for 12 to 14 lb. birds; 2 ¾ to 3 ½ hours for 14 to 18 lb. turkeys; 3 ½ to 4 hours for 18 to 20 lb. turkeys and up to 5 hours for larger turkeys.
-
Insert a meat thermometer into the thigh and breast and remove the turkey when the thermometer reads 170 degrees Fahrenheit in the breast and 180 degrees Fahrenheit in the thigh.
