How to Cook Turkey at High Temperatures (5 Steps)
Cooking a turkey at high temperatures shortens the cooking time, improves browning and makes the skin crispy, but it can result in overcooked breast meat before the thigh meat has reached a safe 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Undercooked turkey can cause food poisoning. To ensure that your turkey has cooked through to a safe temperature, always use an instant read meat thermometer. Look for these in the housewares section of stores.
Things You'll Need
- Roasting pan
- Instant read thermometer
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
Season your turkey according to your recipe. Do not stuff the turkey as the stuffing will not be cooked when the turkey is done.
-
Place the turkey into the roasting pan. The orientation of the turkey, such as breast side up or down, does not matter.
-
Cook the turkey for three to six hours or until the instant read thermometer reads 165 degrees Fahrenheit in the thigh, breast and wing.
-
Remove the turkey and let it rest for five to 10 minutes before serving.
