How to Make a California Roll (9 Steps)

There are many variations on this popular roll. Sometimes the outside is wrapped in rice or cucumber instead of nori (seaweed).

Instructions

  1. Place cellophane on the maki-su (bamboo mat).

  2. Spread 1 c. sushi rice over the cellophane and top it with a sheet of nori (seaweed). (See Related eHows for instructions on making sushi rice.)

  3. Spread crab salad or strips of crab on the nori. Use about 2 to 4 tbsp. salad or about 3 strips of crab.

  4. Top with two to three strips of thinly sliced avocado.

  5. Roll the sushi. (See "How to Make a Sushi Roll," under Related eHows, for details.)

  6. Place the sushi roll on the cutting board.

  7. Sprinkle with tobiko (flying fish roe) and/or sesame seeds.

  8. Slice into six pieces.

  9. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi and vinegared ginger.
