Guide for Cake Mix to Pan Size
One standard boxed cake mix makes approximately 4 to 6 cups of cake batter. Sold at grocery and superstores, cake mixes are available in a variety of flavors. Most 2-inch deep cake pans require only one box of mix.
Round Cake Pans
-
One box of cake mix will fill two round, 6-inch or 7-inch cake pans. One 8-inch round cake pan uses approximately 3 1/2 cups of batter, while one 10-inch round pan uses 6 cups.
Sheet Cakes
-
The standard 9-inch by 13-inch cake can be made with one box of mix. A 12-inch by 18-inch sheet pan uses 14 cups of cake batter, requiring just over two boxes of cake mix.
Shaped Pans
-
Most specialty pans, such as those shaped like cartoon characters, sports balls and party hats, can be filled with one box of cake mix. Consult pan directions for specific details.
Cupcakes
-
One box of pre-packaged cake mix will produce 24 standard size cupcakes, or 12 to 18 jumbo cupcakes.
