How to Serve Stollen

Baking stollen, a German fruitcake-like bread, is as much a Christmas tradition in Germany as Christmas carols and nativity scenes are in the United States. This tradition also includes the shape in which the stollen is baked. The bread is tapered and both ends, with a ridge down the middle. This shape signifies the birth of Christ. This bread is generally made with a combination of almonds, raisins and brightly colored fruits.

Instructions

  1. Bake the stollen a few weeks before you plan to serve it. The flavor improves as it age, so waiting will make it more of a treat for your guests. Store it somewhere cool, but not refrigerated and do not let it get warm. Wrap it tightly in linen or cheesecloth during this period.

  2. Cut the stollen with a knife, do not break it off with your hands. The bread should be eaten with your fingers and served at room temperature.

  3. Serve it with small dishes of your favorite preserves and butter, which can be spread on the bread for additional flavor. You can also add a tbsp of sugar to the top of the stollen.
