How to Gift Wrap a Cake

Gift wrapping a cake presents two primary concerns: ensuring that the cake stays fresh in the packaging and that the packaging itself doesn't disturb the frosting or decorations. Wrap each cake individually if it's a layered cake; you can be on-hand to assemble it for your recipient. Keep your cake from moving around inside a box by placing it on a cardboard cutout larger than the cake but sized to fit the box. Secure it to the cutout with dowels that insert into the bottom of the cake or by applying a thin layer of frosting between the cardboard and the cake.

Sweet Gift

  • Place your cake on a bakery board and center it on a large piece of cellophane or clear vellum paper. Gather it at the top, secure it and decorate it with ribbons, bows or beads. Cut an "X" in the bottom of a pretty cupcake liner and slide it upside down over the cellophane for an added touch. Alternatively, buy a decorative box to package the cake, or purchase a simple box and wrap it with gift wrapping paper, silk or velvet. You can even slice the cake into individual wedges and package each in elegant single-cake boxes and then rearrange them into the shape of the whole cake. Or, make the baking dish part of the decorations by baking individual cakes in mason or jam jars and wrapping ribbons around the tops.
