How to Store Frosting (5 Steps)

Simple frosting consists of shortening of butter, sugar and milk (although some recipes incorporate egg whites for stiffness). Frosting differs from icing because frosting is usually laid on in a thicker layer. Frosting is simple to store and, if packed properly and covered, will keep for two to three days. It is a perishable product though so it's best to use it sooner than that.

Things You'll Need

  • Large bowl
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Disinfected kitchen towel
  • Plastic wrap

Instructions

  1. Coat a large mixing bowl with a thin layer of non-stick cooking spray. Spoon the frosting into the bowl, creating an even smooth layer on top.

  2. Dampen the towel, and wring it out lightly to clear extra moisture.

  3. Lay the towel on top of the frosting. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator.

  4. Remove the towel after 12 hours, run it under warm water and wring it out until slightly damp. Replace the towel, and put the bowl back into the refrigerator. This will help keep it moist and prevent it from forming a hard film on top.

  5. Remove the bowl of frosting from the fridge and spoon any needed amounts into a separate bowl. Set the small bowl in a heat bath (float the bowl on top of hot water) while mixing it to improve its texture.
