Can pork develop trichinosis if it is left out of the refrigerator?
Trichinosis is a foodborne illness caused by a parasite called Trichinella. Trichinella is found in raw or undercooked meat, especially pork, wild game, and bear. It can also be found in raw milk and dairy products.
Trichinella can survive in pork that has been left out of the refrigerator for several days. The parasite can also survive in frozen pork for several months. To kill Trichinella, pork must be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
Symptoms of trichinosis can include:
* Abdominal pain
* Diarrhea
* Nausea
* Vomiting
* Fever
* Muscle pain
* Weakness
* Headache
* Skin rash
Trichinosis can be serious, and it can even be fatal in some cases. If you think you may have trichinosis, see your doctor immediately.
