Should I Use Sweet Potatoes or Yams for Sweet Potato Pies?

If you're perplexed as to what the differences are between sweet potatoes and yams, you're not the only one. The two tubers are notoriously confused for one another, and are occasionally even mislabeled. The good news is, they're so similar that you can use either in a sweet potato pie, and use them interchangeably in other recipes, too.

Yams 101

  • Yams are often grown in Latin America and are much more common in that part of the world. They are occasionally mislabeled as sweet potatoes at the grocery store. The only differences between the two are that they are slightly sweeter than sweet potatoes, have a bit of a higher moisture content and are often longer in appearance. While you wouldn't be able to tell from a bite of a yam, the Latin American counterparts to the sweet potato are less rich in vitamins A and C. So while they're both nutritious vegetables, if you're looking for the healthier choice, choose the sweet potato over the yam.

The Story of Sweet Potatoes

  • Sweet potatoes, which are often rounder in appearance, are more common in the United States, and are commercially grown domestically, as well. They are a touch less sweet than yams and contain less moisture. They can come in many varieties. For example, white sweet potatoes often confuse the unsuspecting shopper or diner with their sweet taste.

Sweet Potato Pie

  • Equal amounts of either sweet potatoes or yams can be used to make sweet potato pie. Simply bake the potatoes in the oven until you can easily insert a fork into their flesh, peel and mash with a potato masher; or run through a potato ricer. You can also use canned sweet potatoes or yams. First drain, and then blend in a food processor until smooth. The only difference to keep in mind is that you may want to add slightly less sugar (to taste) or liquid if you're using yams to compensate for the small differences.

More Sweet Potato and Yam Desserts

  • You can use sweet potatoes or yams to make many other delicious desserts. Using the same mashed or pureed sweet potatoes or yams, you can make a cheesecake, quick bread or muffins, studded with chocolate chips, hazelnuts or other complementary additions.
