What if I Forgot Sugar Inside the Apple Pie?
If you've used sweet apples such as Braeburn, Golden Delicious or Winesap in your apple pie, it may come out perfectly fine even if you forgot to add sugar on the inside. In fact, the taste of the apples will be more prominent than if you had added too much sugar. If you've forgotten the sugar in a pie containing tart Granny Smith apples, don't despair. Sprinkle sugar on top of the crust as soon as you discover your mistake and serve the pie with sweet toppings to ensure a sweet-tart taste in every bite.
Sweet Sauces
-
Store-bought sauces for ice cream come in an assortment of flavors that pair well with apples, such as salted or plain caramel, butterscotch, pineapple or pink lemonade. Make the sauces even more decadent by adding toasted hazelnuts, pecans or walnuts to the mix. Alternatively, if you need to sweeten your sugarless apple pie, make you own sauce with honey, maple syrup or brown sugar. Just add butter, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg, then heat the ingredients together on the stovetop until they are incorporated.
Creamy Sauces
-
Custard sauce, sometimes called by the French name "creme anglaise," is rich with just three ingredients: whole milk, egg yolks and sugar, which are cooked until they thicken. The richness and sweetness of the sauce balances the tartness of apple pie. You can also flavor the sauce with grated orange zest, fresh ginger, vanilla extract or vanilla beans. Serve each slice of pie in a pool of sauce and pour more over the top.
Ice Cream and Whipped Cream
-
With enough ice cream or whipped cream, the tartness of an apple pie without sugar will fade into the background. Choose an ice cream flavor that pairs well with apples but is also interesting enough to distract your taste buds from the lack of sugar in the pie. The best flavors with a less-than-sweet apple pie include French vanilla, maple, butter pecan, buttermilk, cherry vanilla or coffee. Alternatively, make whipped cream sweetened with plenty of powdered sugar. Incoporate cardamom, lavender or lemon thyme into the homemade whipped cream for a unique flavor.
Jams and Preserves With a Kick
-
Jams or preserves warmed slightly in the microwave turn into instant, flavorful sauces to give your tart apple pie sweetness and flavorful depths. Jams or preserves that work well with apples include apricot, blackberry, cherry or orange marmalade. Add a small amount of liqueur or liquor to the jams for even more flavor. Try an apple-flavored brandy, cognac, rum or kirsch, which is brandy with hints of cherry. Orange-flavored Grand Marnier or an Irish cream liqueur that comes in a spiced toffee flavor will also give your tart apple pie a sweet, flavorful kick.
