How can you remove freezer burnt taste from berries?
Freezer burnt berries can have that unpleasant, cardboard-like taste, but there are a few tricks to try and minimize it:
- Cold Water Rinse: Gently rinsing the berries in ice cold water can help remove some of the freezer burnt taste. Quickly pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel.
- Sugar or Honey Enhancement: Adding a little bit of sugar or honey to the berries can sweeten them up, often overpowering any off-flavours.
- Use in Baking/Smoothie: Sometimes the best solution is to use up freezer burnt berries in cooking or blending. Adding them to smoothies, muffins, cakes or other baked goods can mask any undesirable flavours.
- Quick Defrost: Try to avoid the freezer burnt taste altogether by not letting the berries sit in the freezer for too long. When thawing, it's best to do so quickly, like in cold water or in the microwave, instead of letting them defrost in the fridge or at room temperature for extended periods.
