How to Bake a Pie in a Ceramic Pie Plate

Many cooks prefer ceramic pie plates for baking pies due to the beauty of these plates. Ceramic pie plates come in a variety of colors, many with fluted edges that add a decorative flair to any pie. Pies baked in ceramic pie plates generally brown evenly and beautifully in the oven. It may be necessary to add a few minutes to the baking time when you use a ceramic pie plate.

Things You'll Need

  • Prepared pie
  • Ceramic pie plate
  • Oven
  • Hot pads
  • Cooling rack

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pie according to the recipe. The baking procedure is the same whether the pie is a single or double crust pie.

  2. Preheat the oven to the temperature specified in the recipe.

  3. Place the pie in the center rack of the oven and close the oven door.

  4. Monitor the baking process to watch the browning. It may be necessary to pull the pie out of the oven slightly to look at the crust to assess the browning adequately.

  5. Expect that you will need to bake the pie for between five and ten additional minutes to achieve the desired browning. This is due to the ceramic pie plate needing additional oven time to warm to a baking temperature.

  6. Remove the pie from the oven when it is golden brown. If it is a fruit pie, the filling should be bubbly. If it is a custard or pumpkin pie, the filling should be set. Place the pie on the cooling rack and cool for at 20 minutes prior to serving.

  7. Serve the pie either warm or cold.
