How to Pressure Cook Steel Cut Oats
Oatmeal varieties are named for their cut. Steel-cut oats resemble small pin-heads and take longer to cook than rolled or quick oats. Also called Irish oats, steel-cut oats can take more than 30 minutes to cook on a stove top, but with a pressure cooker, you can reduce this time drastically. Pre-toasting the oats is optional, but it both improves the flavor and shortens the cooking time.
Things You'll Need
- Baking sheet
- 1 cup steel-cut oats
- Small stainless steel pot
- Tripod or trivet
- 5 cups water
- 1 tbsp. butter or oil
Instructions
-
Optionally toast the oats on an ungreased baking sheet in a preheated 300 degrees Fahrenheit oven for 20 minutes.
-
Arrange the pot on top of a tripod inside of the pressure cooker.
-
Pour 1 cup of water into the bottom of the pressure cooker, under the stainless steel pot.
-
Add the toasted or untoasted oats and 4 cups water and the butter or oil to the stainless steel pot.
-
Bring the pressure cooker according to your manufacturer's instructions to 15 psi.
-
Begin timing once the pressure reaches 15 psi. Cook the oats for 5 to 6 minutes if they were toasted or 10 to 11 minutes for untoasted steel-cut oats.
-
Remove the pressure cooker from the heat source and wait for the pressure to naturally lower as the pot cools before removing the lid.
