Where did hash browns come from?
The term "hash browns" is first recorded in the middle of the 19th century, when it referred to a combination of finely chopped ham, potatoes, and spices. The name comes from the French word "hacher" meaning "to chop". The dish is traditionally associated with the United States, where it is commonly served as a breakfast food. However, similar dishes have been prepared for centuries in many different parts of the world, including Europe and Asia. The first recorded recipe for hash browns is found in an American cookbook from the 1890s.
