How to Make Hot Dog Chili (Coney Island Style)
Coney Island-style hot dogs are steamed hot dogs with a rich, bean-less beef chili sauce topping. Chili dogs are a staple in the comfort food category, and can be a versatile base for many additional toppings including sauerkraut or chopped onions. Create a homemade hot dog chili for a fresh flavor without added salt and preservatives.
Things You'll Need
- Large saucepan
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, diced
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 tablespoon classic yellow mustard
- 6 ounce can tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
Instructions
-
Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large saucepan until it is thin in consistency, indicating it is hot. Add 1 small onion, chopped fine. Cook the onion until it starts to turn translucent, then add 1 diced garlic clove. Cook the garlic for one to two minutes.
-
Add 1 pound of ground beef and cook it until it is fully browned. Drain any grease from the pan after the beef is browned. Mix in 1 tablespoon chili powder and 2 teaspoons of ground cumin. Blend 1 tablespoon of classic yellow mustard, a 6 ounce can of tomato paste and 1 cup of beef broth with the meat.
-
Bring the mixture to a slight boil over medium-high heat. Lower the temperature to medium-low and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir the chili periodically and turn the heat off when it starts to thicken.
