How to Bake Fish Chunks

Add baked fish pieces to all sorts of pastas, salads, rice, cous cous and other dishes. They add nutritional value and protein to satisfy, turning a simple side into an entree. Sometimes, you can find pre-cut chunks of fish from your favorite vendor, but you can also chop up a filet or steak into pieces of the desired size. These smaller cuts cook a bit faster than a whole filet or steak, so keep a close eye on them to prevent overcooked, dried-out fish.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking dish
  • Nonstick spray
  • Cooking oil or unsalted butter
  • Salt and pepper
  • Additional flavoring agents

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 15 to 20 minutes. High heat and a short cook time is an effective way to get a nice crispy exterior on your fish chunks while preserving the inner tenderness. Grease a glass or ceramic baking dish lightly with nonstick spray.

  2. Place the pieces of fish in the baking dish. Drizzle them with cooking oil or melted unsalted butter. Squeeze on some citrus juice or add a splash of soy sauce, tamari, wine, cider vinegar or other suitable liquid, if desired. Add zest from a citrus fruit if you use one. Sprinkle on salt and pepper to taste, along with other complementary herbs, spices and aromatics. Dill, thyme, rosemary, blackening, garlic and ginger are just a few possibilities. Roll the fish chunks around to coat them with seasonings.

  3. Place the baking dish in the middle of the oven. Cook the fish for about 8 to 15 minutes, depending on their thickness. Toss the pieces around about halfway through. Baking times are only approximations; cut into the thickest piece and confirm that the inside is completely opaque to ensure the fish is safely cooked through.
