Yes, it is legal to have chickens in Chesapeake, VA.
According to the Chesapeake Code of Ordinances, Section 14-200, the following restrictions apply to keeping chickens in Chesapeake:
- Each hen must have at least 4 square feet of coop space.
- Each rooster must have at least 6 square feet of coop space.
- The coop must be at least 4 feet off the ground.
- The coop must be made of sturdy material that can withstand the elements.
- The coop must have a roof that prevents water from leaking into the coop.
- The coop must have adequate ventilation to prevent the buildup of ammonia fumes.
- The coop must be located at least 10 feet from any property line.
- No more than 6 hens and 1 rooster may be kept on a property.
- Chickens must be kept in a humane manner.
In addition to these requirements, the Chesapeake Code of Ordinances also states that it is unlawful to allow chickens to roam free on any property. Chickens must be kept in a coop or pen at all times.
