What is pea fowl?

Peafowl, often referred to as peacocks, are beautiful and majestic birds belonging to the pheasant family, Phasianidae. Peacocks are native to South Asia, mainly India and Sri Lanka, and are widely recognized for their vibrant plumage and striking fan-shaped tails.

Characteristics:

- Size: Peafowl are relatively large birds, with males (peacocks) typically measuring around 3 to 4 feet in length and females (peahens) being slightly smaller.

- Plumage: The males possess stunning iridescent feathers, mainly in shades of blue and green, with striking eye-shaped markings. The females have more muted, dull-colored plumage, often in shades of brown and gray.

Behavior:

- Social Structure: Peafowl often live in small flocks, with a single dominant male (cock) and multiple females (hens) and their offspring.

- Courtship: During the mating season, peacocks engage in elaborate courtship displays to impress the peahens. They spread their tail feathers, strut around, and create low, rumbling calls.

- Diet: Peafowl are omnivores and feed on a variety of items, including seeds, grains, fruits, insects, and small invertebrates.

- Habitat: These birds prefer open areas with access to water, such as grasslands, forests, and cultivated lands.

Cultural Significance:

- Peafowl hold cultural and symbolic significance in many societies, often representing beauty, royalty, and pride.

- In Hindu mythology, peacocks are considered sacred and associated with the deities Karthikeya and Indra.

- Peafowl are also national birds of several countries, including India and Pakistan.
