Why do chickens have wings?

While chickens have wings, they aren't able to fly long distances like other birds can. Instead, they primarily use their wings as an aid in walking. Additionally, they also utilize their wings while running, flapping them out for balance. These birds can use their wings as a means of flight for short distances as well, as in the scenario of fleeing imminent danger from a predator. Lastly, their presence serves the additional utility of contributing to a chicken's elaborate mating rituals.
