What kind of cage do chameleons need?

Enclosure Type:

Screened Enclosures: Chameleons need enclosures with good cross-ventilation to regulate temperature and maintain ambient humidity. Mesh or screened enclosures are a suitable choice for chameleons as they provide better air circulation compared to solid-sided enclosures.

Size:

The size of the cage will depend on the chameleon species. As a general guideline:

- Small species: Minimum 18" x 18" x 24" (45 x 45 x 60 cm)

- Medium species: Minimum 24" x 24" x 36" (60 x 60 x 90 cm)

- Large species: Minimum 36" x 36" x 48" (90 x 90 x 120 cm)

A tall cage is necessary to allow for vertical movement and climbing, which is crucial for chameleons.

Placement:

- Position the cage in a well-ventilated area, away from direct drafts.

- Avoid areas with extreme temperature fluctuations.

- Chameleons need sunlight, but not direct sunlight. Place the enclosure near a window with filtered light or use a UVB light.

Decor:

- Provide climbing opportunities with branches of varying thickness.

- Add live or artificial plants for hiding and exploring.

- A substrate such as coconut fibers or orchid bark can be placed at the bottom of the enclosure to help maintain humidity.

- A water bowl or a dripper system should be provided for drinking.

Lighting and Heating:

- Provide a UVB light to ensure the chameleon can synthesize vitamin D3 and absorb calcium. UV lights should be placed inside the enclosure, and they need to be specifically designed for reptiles.

- Use heat lamps or ceramic heaters to maintain appropriate temperatures. Chameleons have specific temperature preferences, so the setup should allow for a temperature gradient within the enclosure.
