How to Cook Bulgur in the Oven (4 Steps)
If you're looking to easily add whole grains into your recipe repertoire, try bulgur. It has a nutty, earthy flavor and conveniently comes in four grades: very coarse, coarse, medium and fine. Fine bulgur is used for dishes like tabbouleh, while coarser grinds are great for any sides prepared like rice or couscous. Cook plain bulgur by adding it to a pot of boiling water or broth, taking it off the heat and giving it about 20 minutes. Or, combine bulgur with other ingredients and cook it in the oven.
Things You'll Need
- Dutch oven or oven-safe pan
- Cooking oil
- Vegetables
- Herbs and spices
- Broth, stock or white wine
- Fork
Instructions
-
Center an oven rack and preheat to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Give the oven at least 20 minutes to heat up all the way.
-
Heat a Dutch oven or large, deep oven-safe pan over medium-high heat, then coat it with cooking oil. Saute any desired vegetables seasoned with herbs and spices until browned. For example, cook onion, carrots and green beans with salt, pepper, thyme, turmeric and chopped garlic; or, heat a can of chopped peeled tomatoes with spinach, salt, pepper, garlic, oregano and marjoram.
-
Pour 2 1/2 cups of broth, stock or white wine per cup of bulgur into the pan and bring it to a simmer. Add the bulgur, stir everything together, pat it down into an even layer, place a lid on the Dutch oven or skillet and put it into the middle of the oven.
-
Cook the bulgur until it's fluffy, which should take about 25 minutes. Remove it from the oven and fluff the grain with a fork. Let the preparation stand for 10 minutes before serving it.
