What is eating your pumpkins?

Several pests may be responsible for eating pumpkins, including:

1. Squirrels: Squirrels are known for raiding gardens and orchards and are fond of pumpkins. They nibble on the fruit, leaving small holes or damage to the rind.

2. Raccoons: Raccoons are opportunistic omnivores and will eat pumpkins given the chance. They may chew through the rind or carry away entire pumpkins.

3. Deer: Deer can cause extensive damage to crops, including pumpkins. They may browse on the leaves and stems of pumpkin plants and eat the fruit.

4. Insects: Certain insects, such as cucumber beetles and squash bugs, can damage pumpkins by feeding on the leaves, stems, and fruit. Their feeding activity can cause holes, wilting, and discoloration of the pumpkins.

5. Rodents: Rodents like mice and rats can also feed on pumpkins, leaving behind gnaw marks on the rind.

6. Birds: Birds, such as crows or blackbirds, may peck at pumpkins, damaging the rind and making them vulnerable to spoilage.

If you suspect pests are eating your pumpkins, consider implementing preventive measures such as fencing, netting, or repellents to protect your crop. Monitoring your garden regularly and removing any damaged pumpkins can also help mitigate pest damage.
