Holiday Treats Made With Potato

Potatoes are the basis for numerous comfort foods. Whether mashed into a creamy mountain topped with butter; fried in long, crispy sticks; or baked whole and smothered in cheese and sour cream, potatoes are satisfying in many ways. But their tasty attributes aren't limited to savory dishes. Use this versatile vegetable to create sweet confections and add an element of comfort to holiday treats.

Dipped Chips

  • Add a little twist to chocolate-dipped potato chips and you'll have the most festive chips your guests have ever crunched. Start with thick kettle chips, which hold up well to dipping. Then dip the potato chips in candy melting wafers, which are available in just about every color imaginable. Dress up your chips according to the holiday you're celebrating. Choose orange and black for Halloween; red, white and blue for July 4th; and your favorite team colors for the Super Bowl.

Potato Chip Cookies

  • Potato chip cookies are old-fashioned cookies straight from Grandma's kitchen. With the perfect combination of sweet and salty, they're great for parties, picnics or packaged in pretty gift tins. Basic potato chip cookies call for flour, sugar, butter, vanilla and crushed potato chips. Vary the recipe to make your cookies special and surprising for every occasion. Add pecans, almonds or macadamia pieces; chocolate, butterscotch or white chocolate chips; or raisins, dried cranberries or dried pineapple. Dip the cookies halfway in dark, white or colored candy coatings that reflect the holiday.

Mashed Potato Candy

  • Mashed potato candy is made by combining unseasoned mashed potatoes with butter and confectioner's sugar. Add vanilla extract for added flavor, or try other extracts, such as almond, coconut, rum or raspberry. Mix the potato dough and refrigerate it for two hours. When you remove it, it should be firm enough to press out and shape with holiday-themed cookie cutters. Place the shapes into the freezer for one hour. Remove them a few at a time, dip them in chocolate or colored candy coating, and decorate with candy drizzles, sprinkles or luster dust.

Sweet Potato Fudge

  • Some holiday celebrations -- such as Thanksgiving -- cry out for a pan of homemade fudge. Combine that with the scent of warm sweet potatoes and you've got yourself an unforgettable dessert that friends and family will request for years to come. Sweet potato fudge is made with unseasoned mashed sweet potatoes, sweetened condensed milk, white chocolate, butter, vanilla extract and pumpkin pie spice. Add ingredient variations such as nuts, rum extract or cinnamon chips.
