How to Make a How to Train Your Dragon Cake

Make a cake inspired by the 2010 Dreamworks film "How to Train Your Dragon" for your child next birthday party, cake competition or other event. The film follows the adventures of a young viking who, despite aspirations to hunt dragons, becomes the friend of one. Toothless, the black dragon he befriends, is a cuddly creature that you can be recreate as a fondant cake decoration. Create cakes in the shape of Toothless and other dragons from the film, or use dragon fondant decorations to decorate round and sheet cakes.

Things You'll Need

  • 8- or 10-inch round cake pans
  • Cake mix
  • Buttercream frosting
  • Fondant
  • Marshmallow fondant
  • Black coloring gel
  • Green coloring gel
  • Yellow coloring gel
  • Blue coloring gel
  • Toothpicks
  • Images from the film (optional)
  • Plastic container (optional)
  • Cake plate
  • Sparkling candles

Instructions

  1. Bake an 8- to 10-inch round, two-layer cake. Use any type of cake desired (yellow, chocolate, marble, strawberry, vanilla). Allow each part of the cake to cool. Stack the layers on top of one another using buttercream frosting as the "glue" between them.

  2. Frost the cake in sky-blue marshmallow fondant (purchase or make your own). Sculpt some white fondant into the shape of Toothless, the black dragon friend of the movie's main character. Toothless's body is a basic dragon shape with a rounded head and thick tail that forms a point on its end. Use toothpicks to hold the head and the body together and stills from the film as guidance if necessary.

  3. Color the Toothless fondant shape with black coloring gel. Use yellow coloring gel for the eyes. Place the shape on top of the cake. Use a bit of buttercream frosting to hold the dragon in place.

  4. Make grass out of green-colored fondant to use as the border around the bottom of the cake. Use white fondant to shape clouds and attach them around the cake using buttercream frosting.

  5. Add sparkling candles around the dragon's mouth when presenting the cake.
