How Do I Crush Strawberries?

Strawberries are virtually synonymous with fresh summer fruit; their delicate flesh is flavorful and sweet in addition to being packed with antioxidants and vitamin C. Most varieties only grow during the early summer months, which is why so many people preserve them. To preserve strawberries by freezing or canning, recipes typically call for crushing, which can be accomplished with a potato masher.

Things You'll Need

  • Colander
  • Mixing bowl
  • Potato masher
  • Spoon

Instructions

  1. Rinse the strawberries thoroughly with cold water in a colander just before you want to use them.

  2. Pour them from the colander into a large mixing bowl.

  3. Crush the berries with a potato masher. Work in small batches if you have a large volume.

  4. Scrape down the side of the bowl after every few mashes so that the berries are crushed somewhat uniformly.
