How to Cube Butternut Squash

Butternut squash is frequently seen in fall cuisine. Popular pairings include apples, onions and sweet potatoes. Butternut squash has a texture similar to pumpkin and requires similar preparation techniques. These vegetables can be very thick and require strong force to cut. Choose a sharp knife when preparing butternut squash. Some people choose to bake butternut squash before cubing it. You can use the same techniques to cube cooked and uncooked squash.

Things You'll Need

  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Water
  • Vegetable wash
  • Spoon

Instructions

  1. Rinse the squash with water. If desired, apply a small dab of vegetable wash to the squash. Rub this wash over the squash and rinse with water.

  2. Place the squash on the cutting board.

  3. Cut the tip of the squash off with a sharp knife.

  4. Cut the squash in half, where the thin part of the squash meets the thick part.

  5. Stand the thin portion of the squash on its bottom. Peel the skin off the squash. Insert the knife on top of the squash, where the feel meets the flesh. Slice down. Repeat this process until you remove all of the skin of the squash.

  6. Turn the thin portion of squash on its side. Cut the squash in slices about 1 inch thick.

  7. Stack two of these slices. Cut these slices into 1 inch thick columns. Turn the slices 90 degrees and cut these columns into 1-inch thick cubes.

  8. Cut the bulb of the squash in half lengthwise.

  9. Scoop the seeds of the squash using a spoon. Run the spoon along the flesh of the squash until you remove all of the sides.

  10. Peel and cube the bulb of the squash using the same techniques you used to peel and cube the thin portion of the squash.
