How to Heat Steak Pie

Steak pies range in style from the basic -- as in rich beef stew topped with a savory shortbread crust -- to the elaborate, such as Guinness-braised short ribs covered with ethereal puff pastry. They all need to be heated to 165 degrees Fahrenheit, though, which takes the guesswork out of determining doneness. Thaw frozen steak pies in the refrigerator overnight before heating them for even cooking throughout the filling.

Things You'll Need

  • Milk (optional)
  • Instant-read thermometer

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Slice a 1/2-inch slit in the top of the crust to release steam during cooking. Brush the crust with a thin layer of milk.

  3. Place the pie on the middle oven rack. Set an oven-safe bowl filled with hot water on the oven floor.

  4. Bake the meat pie until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 F.

    A 1/2-pound pie takes about 20 to 25 minutes to reach 165 F; 3/4- to 1-pound pies take 35 to 45 minutes; 1 to 1 1/2-pound pies take about 50 minutes; 2-pound pies take about 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes.
