How to Refrigerate Apple Pie After Baking (4 Steps)

Refrigerating apple pie extends its shelf life longer than just letting it sit on the counter under a pie cover. It also helps to avoid the risk of bacteria or insects finding your dessert--particularly during the warm, summer months. Tucking the pie away may also prevent grazing from snack seekers coming through the kitchen, although it's doubtful anybody in the house forgot that fresh apple pie is around somewhere.

  1. Cool the apple pie on a wire rack for 30 minutes after removing it from the oven. You can place it straight into the refrigerator, but waiting for a half hour allows the fruit to settle comfortably inside the pie and lets the juices redistribute evenly.

  2. Cover the pie loosely with a cloth towel or an inverted bowl. Do not cover with plastic wrap while it is still cooling, as this will let moisture collect underneath the plastic. Some cooks prefer a cloth towel because it won't damage the crust as an inverted bowl can. Others find a light enough, plastic bowl works fine.

  3. Place the covered pie in the refrigerator. Tuck it into a back corner where it won't be disturbed by the jostling of other foods, or sneaky snackers.

  4. Eat the pie or freeze it within three to four days for best results. Warm the pie in the oven or microwave before serving.
