How do you get wax off tomatoes?
To remove wax from tomatoes, follow these steps:
1. Boil water: Fill a large pot or kettle with water and bring it to a boil.
2. Dip the tomatoes: Using a slotted spoon or tongs, carefully place the tomatoes into the boiling water for a few seconds (5-10 seconds). The hot water will help loosen the wax.
3. Transfer to cold water: Immediately transfer the tomatoes to a bowl filled with cold water. This will help stop the cooking process and prevent the tomatoes from becoming mushy.
4. Peel the tomatoes: Once the tomatoes have cooled down, the skin should easily peel off. To peel, simply use your fingers or a paring knife to remove the skin.
5. Rinse: Rinse the peeled tomatoes under cold water to remove any remaining wax or skin.
6. Dry the tomatoes: Pat the tomatoes dry with a clean kitchen towel.
The tomatoes are now ready to be used in your recipes.
Additional tips:
- To make the peeling process easier, you can also score the tomatoes before dipping them in the boiling water. To score the tomatoes, make a shallow X-shape cut on the bottom of each tomato.
- If you don't have a pot or kettle large enough to fit the tomatoes, you can also blanch the tomatoes in a deep bowl or container.
- If you don't want to use hot water, you can also remove wax from tomatoes by rubbing them with a little bit of vegetable oil.
