How to Substitute Pancake Mix for Flour (5 Steps)
Novice cooks may worry that they won't succeed in preparing a dish if they don't have the correct ingredients. Ingredient substitution lists exist, but many cooks don't know about the lists or don't fully understand how to use them. When needed, ingredient substitutions can work as well as the recipe's original listed ingredient. Flour, leavening agents, sugar and flavorings make up pancake mixes, so many recipes that call for flour will come out well with pancake mixed substituted for the flour.
Things You'll Need
- Pancake mix
- Additional ingredients as called for by the recipe
- Measuring cup
- Measuring spoons
Instructions
-
Prepare to substitute pancake mix for flour in recipes that use flour with baking powder and baking soda (as opposed to yeast), such as biscuits, cakes or cookies.
-
Measure your ingredients. For each cup of flour that the recipe calls for, reduce the amount by 2 1/2 tbsp. to account for the sugar and leavening agents that the pancake mix includes.
-
Reduce any other ingredients proportionally (eggs, water or milk, etc).
-
Do not add in further leavening agents, such as baking powder and baking soda. Do not add in any extra sugar, unless you want a particularly sweet recipe.
-
Follow all directions for mixing ingredients and baking.
