How to Bake Walleye Nuggets
It's little wonder that so many seafood restaurants across America pay homage to the walleye by placing the name in their masthead. This freshwater fish boasts abundant white meat that is both mild and sweet. If you wish to bake walleye nuggets for dinner, you'll want to carefully enhance the flavor, not overwhelm it with spicy or bitter additions, to best showcase this impressive catch.
Things You'll Need
- About 2 pounds fresh walleye, cleaned and cut into 2-inch chunks
- Casserole dish
- Nonfat cooking spray
- Three bowls
- Flour
- Eggs or olive oil
- Bread crumbs
- Chopped pecans (optional)
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Spray a casserole dish with nonfat cooking spray or coat it with olive oil.
-
Set up an orderly dipping station on your counter with three bowls: one for flour, one for eggs or olive oil and the third for bread crumbs. Put your casserole dish at the end of the line to ensure that you can prepare the walleye efficiently and get dinner on the table in a jiffy.
-
Place some flour and a little lemon-pepper seasoning in the first bowl and stir. Whisk two eggs or place the olive oil in the second bowl. Enliven your bread crumb bowl by adding some finely chopped pecans, if you like. If you don't have ready-made bread crumbs on hand, crush some of your own with corn flakes and add a dash of garlic powder to the mix.
-
Dredge each walleye nugget in the flour and then the liquid. Coat the nuggets in bread crumbs on both sides before placing them in a single layer in the casserole dish.
-
Fill in any bare spots on the nuggets with bread crumbs, then spray the nuggets with nonfat cooking spray to keep the crumbs in place while the walleye nuggets bake.
-
Put the casserole dish in the oven and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the dish and flip the nuggets over and bake for another 10 minutes, or until the walleye flakes easily with a fork, just like salmon.
