How to Get the Fat Out of Milk at Home (7 Steps)
Whole milk contains 3.5 percent milk fat, so while it has a rich buttery taste, it may also add more calories to your diet than you want. While skim milk is available at grocery stores, making your own low-fat milk at home is another option. Remove the fat from whole milk and use the healthier milk in baking or drink it as you would normally.
Things You'll Need
- Saucepan
- Large bowl
- Spoon
- Plastic container (optional)
Instructions
-
Fill a saucepan with milk.
-
Place the pan on the stove and cook the milk at a medium heat for nine minutes. Don't allow the milk to boil over.
-
Remove the pan from the heat.
-
Pour the milk into a large bowl and allow it to cool completely.
-
Wait for the cream to rise to the top. The cream contains the fat in the milk.
-
Skim the cream from the milk by scooping it up with a spoon. Keep the cream in a plastic container for use in baking or beverages, or throw it away.
-
Repeat the heating and skimming process until no more cream rises to the top.
