How to Get the Fat Out of Milk at Home (7 Steps)

Whole milk contains 3.5 percent milk fat, so while it has a rich buttery taste, it may also add more calories to your diet than you want. While skim milk is available at grocery stores, making your own low-fat milk at home is another option. Remove the fat from whole milk and use the healthier milk in baking or drink it as you would normally.

Things You'll Need

  • Saucepan
  • Large bowl
  • Spoon
  • Plastic container (optional)

Instructions

  1. Fill a saucepan with milk.

  2. Place the pan on the stove and cook the milk at a medium heat for nine minutes. Don't allow the milk to boil over.

  3. Remove the pan from the heat.

  4. Pour the milk into a large bowl and allow it to cool completely.

  5. Wait for the cream to rise to the top. The cream contains the fat in the milk.

  6. Skim the cream from the milk by scooping it up with a spoon. Keep the cream in a plastic container for use in baking or beverages, or throw it away.

  7. Repeat the heating and skimming process until no more cream rises to the top.
