Can You Heat Up Duck Sauce in a Jar?

When you’ve got various jars of food, you may wonder if you can heat up specific sauces like duck sauce right in the jar. The short answer is yes; there are effective ways to use a glass jar as a heating container so long as you follow specific safeguards depending on what appliance you’re using. There are also two additional, universal safety precautions. First, always start warming the jar at room temperature. A cold jar exposed to heat may crack or shatter explosively. Second, if the sauce is left over from another meal, bring it to a rolling boil instead of simmering to ensure food safety.

Stove Top Method

  • When warming duck sauce in a glass jar, begin by removing the jar's lid. Touch the outside of the jar, making sure there’s no residual chill. Do not leave the sauce out any longer than two hours before warming it to ensure proper food safety. Next, take a large pan into which you can put a cooling rack. This keeps the jar from direct contact with the bottom of the pot. Put the jar into the center of the pan and surround it three-quarters full with water. Simmer on low until you see small bubbles forming in the sauce. Stir and warm for a few minutes longer. Remove from the water using canning tongs or a heavy-duty oven mitt.

Oven Method

  • The oven method for warming duck sauce in glass closely resembles the stove top method. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Set up the duck sauce using an oven-safe pan, rack and water as you did on the stove and place it in the center of the oven. Do not cover your pot, as the pressure from steam can crack the glass. Continue heating to desired temperature. Note that you can use a meat or candy thermometer to monitor the sauce’s progress.

Microwave

  • If you want to use your microwave to warm sauce, use a low setting and make sure the sauce container isn’t completely full -- otherwise you’ll end up with splatters all over the inside of the microwave from the bubbling sauce. Some mess can be prevented by putting a paper towel lightly over the opening of the jar to catch minor splashes.

Toaster Oven

  • Putting a glass jar in a toaster oven can be tricky. First, you may not have enough room to securely stand the jar up straight. Second, the exposed elements in a toaster oven can lead to smoking if any of the sauce bubbles over. As a result, this appliance is not recommended for warming up duck sauce sauce in a jar.
