How to Fry an Egg in the Middle of a Slice of Bread

There's something about the whimsical nature of a fried egg perched in the center of toast that's inspired more than its fair share of nicknames. Whether you know it as eggs in a basket, nested eggs, Navy eggs, eggs on a raft or toad in the hole, the dish is far simpler to make than it is to pin down its "proper" name.

Things You'll Need

  • Frying pan with lid
  • Butter
  • Biscuit cutter or small glass
  • Spatula
  • Seasoning to taste

Instructions

  1. Melt a small amount of butter in a pan set over medium-low heat.

  2. Press a glass or biscuit cutter into the center of a piece of bread and remove the circular center of the bread.

  3. Put the slice of bread in the pan and toast it until it becomes light brown on the bottom. This will likely take at least 3 minutes. Remove the bread from the pan temporarily.

  4. Melt additional butter in the pan and return the bread to the pan, now with the untoasted side down.

  5. Crack an egg against the side of the pan. Holding the cracked egg over the toasting bread, slide the egg into center of the bread's hole. Season the egg and surrounding bread with salt and pepper.

  6. Cover the pan and let the nested egg cook for about 7 minutes. At the end of that period, check the nested egg. Once the yolk reaches the firmness you prefer, remove the nested egg. Alternatively, flip the bread and sear the egg briefly to brown it, then flip it upright and remove from the pan.
