Why is there yeast in new bread?
Yeast is the key ingredient in making bread rise! Here's why:
* Yeast is a tiny organism: Yeast is a single-celled fungus. It's microscopic, but very powerful!
* It eats sugar and releases gas: Yeast feeds on sugars in the flour. As it eats, it produces carbon dioxide gas as a byproduct. This gas gets trapped within the dough, causing it to expand and rise.
* This makes the bread light and airy: The rising process gives bread its characteristic light and airy texture. Without yeast, bread would be flat and dense.
In addition to making bread rise, yeast also adds flavor and aroma to the bread.
There are different types of yeast used in baking, including active dry yeast and instant yeast. But they all work in the same way: eating sugar, producing gas, and making our bread delicious!
