How do you fry green tomatoes?
How to Fry Green Tomatoes:
Ingredients:
* 4-6 green tomatoes, sliced about 1/4 inch thick
* 1 cup all-purpose flour
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
* 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
* 1/2 teaspoon paprika
* 1/2 cup buttermilk
* 1 cup vegetable oil (or other frying oil)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the tomatoes: Wash and slice the tomatoes. Pat them dry with paper towels.
2. Make the batter: In a shallow dish, whisk together the flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
3. Dip and coat: In another shallow dish, pour the buttermilk. Dip each tomato slice in the buttermilk, then dredge in the flour mixture, making sure they are evenly coated.
4. Heat the oil: Pour the oil into a heavy skillet or Dutch oven and heat over medium-high heat. The oil is hot enough when a drop of batter sizzles and quickly rises to the surface.
5. Fry the tomatoes: Carefully place the coated tomato slices in the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
6. Drain and serve: Remove the fried tomatoes from the oil with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain. Serve immediately.
Tips:
* Choosing tomatoes: Choose green tomatoes that are firm and free of blemishes. Avoid overripe tomatoes.
* Seasoning: Adjust the seasoning to your preference. You can add other spices like cayenne pepper, onion powder, or dried herbs.
* Temperature: Be careful not to overcrowd the skillet. This will lower the oil temperature and result in greasy tomatoes.
* Serving: Serve fried green tomatoes with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch dressing, honey mustard, or a spicy aioli.
Enjoy!
