Easy Cabbage Rolls
This recipe is simple to make and perfect for a hearty, satisfying meal.
Ingredients:
* For the filling:
* 1 lb ground beef
* 1/2 cup chopped onion
* 1 cup cooked rice (white or brown)
* 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
* 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed tomato soup
* 1 teaspoon dried oregano
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
* For the cabbage:
* 1 large head green cabbage
* Water
Instructions:
1. Prepare the filling: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef and onion. Drain any excess fat.
2. Combine the filling: Add the cooked rice, tomato sauce, tomato soup, oregano, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Mix well.
3. Prepare the cabbage: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core of the cabbage. Place the cabbage head upside down in the boiling water for about 5 minutes, or until the outer leaves soften enough to be easily removed. Remove the cabbage from the water and let cool slightly.
4. Assemble the rolls: Carefully peel off the softened cabbage leaves, one at a time. Place a spoonful of the filling onto the bottom of each leaf, and roll it up tightly. Place the rolls seam-side down in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
5. Bake: Pour the remaining tomato sauce mixture over the cabbage rolls. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the cabbage rolls are heated through.
Tips:
* To prevent the cabbage leaves from breaking, you can blanch them in boiling water for a shorter amount of time and then shock them in ice water.
* You can substitute ground turkey or pork for the ground beef.
* Add other vegetables to the filling, such as chopped carrots, celery, or mushrooms.
* Serve the cabbage rolls with a side of mashed potatoes, bread, or a salad.
Enjoy!
