How do you plant pumpkins?
Here are the steps to plant pumpkins:
1. Choose a sunny location in your garden with well-drained soil.
2. The soil should have a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. If your soil is not the right pH, you can amend it by adding lime or sulfur.
3. Prepare the soil by tilling it to a depth of 12 inches and removing any weeds or debris.
4. Add a balanced fertiliser, such as a 10-10-10 fertiliser, to the soil according to the package instructions.
5. Plant the pumpkin seeds in hills 3 to 4 feet apart. Each hill should have 3 to 4 seeds.
6. Cover the seeds with soil and water them well.
7. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Pumpkins need about 1 inch of water per week.
8. When the seedlings have emerged, thin them to 2 or 3 plants per hill.
9. Fertilise the plants every 4 to 6 weeks with a fertiliser that is high in potassium, such as a 0-10-10 fertiliser.
10. Control pests and diseases by using organic methods, such as neem oil or insecticidal soap.
11. Harvest the pumpkins when they are ripe. Ripe pumpkins will be hard to the touch and have a deep orange colour.
