What do you call the food making process in a plant?
The process by which plants create their food is called photosynthesis. In photosynthesis plants use sunlight to energy glucose, which is a sugar molecule that plants use as food. This process takes place in the leaves of plants, and requires carbon dioxide and water.
Here are the steps involved in photosynthesis:
-Sunlight Absorption: Chlorophyll, a pigment in the leaves, absorbs sunlight.
-Water Uptake: Plants take in water through their roots.
-Carbon Dioxide Absorption: Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through tiny openings called stomata
-Primary Light Reaction: Sunlight energy split water molecules into hydrogen ions (H+) and oxygen atoms. The oxygen is released into the atmosphere, while the hydrogen ions are used in the next steps.
-Carbon Fixation: Hydrogen atoms combined with carbon dioxide (CO2) to form glucose and other organic molecules.
- Secondary Light Reaction: Additional sunlight energy is used to form ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a molecule that stores energy for the plant.
