How to Make Your Own Butter-Flavored Popcorn Seasoning
Whether you're a die-hard movie fan or a health-conscious foodie, making your own popcorn seasoning is simple and quick. The basic formula requires little else than melted fat and salt. Or, you can get creative, whipping up a popcorn snack for every mood that strikes. Either way, making your own butter-flavored seasoning allows you to avoid artificial flavorings and preservatives, and probably gain a few friends in the process.
Classic Homemade Seasoning
-
Basic homemade popcorn seasoning couldn't be easier: all you need is melted butter, some high-quality, coarse salt, like sea salt or kosher salt, and a batch of freshly popped corn. To make the popcorn, place 2 parts kernels to 1 part vegetable oil, cooking for three to five minutes until almost all of the kernels pop. Melt some butter -- nothing else needed than the original buttery taste -- and drizzle it over the warm popcorn and season to taste with salt.
Clarified Butter
-
Clarified butter approximates the butter-flavored oils of movie-style popcorn and you can make your own. Clarified butter contains the rich flavor of butter as well as the lighter texture and higher smoking point of oil. Take a stick of butter and place it in a small saucepan over low heat. Let the butter melt slowly; do not disturb. Once it is melted, use a knife to carefully skim the foam off the top. Throw out what you've skimmed off. Transfer the now-clarified butter into a heatproof container and spoon it onto your popcorn.
Coconut Oil
-
Coconut oil has the richness and mild taste of butter. For the most neutral scent and flavor, use refined coconut oil. Or, use coconut oil to make vegan butter. In a blender, mix 1 part canola oil with 2 parts nondairy milk, 4 parts melted coconut oil, salt, liquid lecithin and apple cider vinegar. Lecithin is a naturally occurring fat that you can buy as a dietary supplement. Use 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, 2 teaspoons lecithin and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar for each 1 cup coconut oil.
Margarine in the Microwave
-
Make DIY microwave popcorn using a brown paper bag, popcorn kernels, salt, wax paper, a stapler and any solid butter flavoring -- margarine, shortening, vegan butter, solid coconut oil or butter itself. Place the bag on its side and line the interior with a large piece of wax paper. Place a pile of popcorn kernels in the center and top it with several tablespoons of the butter flavoring. Staple the end of the bag and microwave on high for several minutes, 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 minutes per 1/3 cup popping corn.
