Why is there so much sugar in sweet and sour sauce?
There is not a significant amount of sugar in sweet and sour sauce. The two main ingredients are vinegar and ketchup or tomato paste. Vinegar tends to be sour, while tomato paste is known to have a sweeter taste which comes naturally from tomatoes. Therefore, only moderate amounts of sugar is added to balance the flavours.
