Are popcorn kernels made from one piece of corn?

Popcorn kernels are not made from a single piece of corn. Rather, each kernel contains a starchy endosperm surrounded by a hull made up of pericarp and seed coat layers. The endosperm is what pops when heated, while the hull remains intact.
