How long do you boil potatoes if plan on making mashed potatoes?
Boil the potatoes until they are completely tender, about 20 minutes for small red potatoes and 25 minutes for yellow or Russet potatoes.
* To check if the potatoes are done, insert a sharp knife into the center of the potatoes. If the knife slides in and out easily, the potatoes are done.
Alternatively, you can use a potato masher to check the potatoes for doneness.
* If the masher slides through the potatoes easily, without any resistance, the potatoes are done.
