Where does the word potato originate from?

The word "potato" comes from the Taíno language, which was spoken by the indigenous people of the Caribbean. The Taíno word "batata" was used to describe the sweet potato, which was a staple food in their diet. When Spanish explorers arrived in the Caribbean in the 15th century, they encountered the sweet potato and adopted the Taíno word "batata" to refer to it. However, the Spanish also encountered another tuberous vegetable that was native to the Americas, which was the potato. They initially referred to this vegetable as "papa", but eventually adopted the Taíno word "batata" to refer to it as well. The English word "potato" is derived from the Spanish word "patata".
