Where did American cheese originate from?

The name "American cheese" was first used in the 19th century to refer to a type of cheese that was produced in the United States. Similar cheeses were being produced around the same time in Switzerland and Canada. The most popular type of American cheese today is a mild, yellow cheese that is often used in sandwiches, on pizzas, and in other processed foods. It was developed by a Canadian dairy farmer named James L. Kraft in the early 20th century.
