How to Cook Sliced Baked Mozzarella (6 Steps)

Mozzarella melts beautifully into stretchy threads of gooey delight. While commonly melted on top of pizza, tucked into lasagna, layered on chicken or eggplant parmigiana or shredded into mostaccioli or baked penne, good-quality mozzarella is every bit as delicious on its own. The key to baking mozzarella is to keep an eye on it, because it can blacken and scorch if left unattended for too long. Serve baked mozzarella slices bubbling hot, because they will solidify as they cool.

Things You'll Need

  • Chef’s knife or cheese slicer
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or olive oil
  • Paper towels
  • Salt pepper
  • Italian seasoning
  • Spatula

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 Fahrenheit, with the rack set slightly lower than dead center.

  2. Slice your mozzarella into flat rounds or sticks that are about the length and thickness of your index finger. Keep the thickness as consistent as you can so that the slices all bake through at the same rate. It is easier to slice very soft buffalo mozzarella if you place it in the freezer for 10 to 20 minutes first.

  3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or coat it thoroughly by wiping it down with a paper towel dampened with olive oil. The baking sheet must be completely covered to avoid scorching the cheese.

  4. Lay the mozzarella slices out on the baking sheet in a single layer. Do not crowd them. Season the tops with salt, pepper and Italian seasoning for a bit of extra flavor.

  5. Bake the mozzarella slices for five to seven minutes, or until they are bubbly and starting to brown in spots.

  6. Slide the baked mozzarella slices off of the baking sheet with a spatula. Serve them on sandwiches or with slices of toasted baguette brushed with garlic oil.
