What animals eat coconut crabs?

Coconut crabs have few predators due to their large size and powerful pincers, but they are occasionally preyed upon by:

- Larger Coconut Crabs: Larger coconut crabs may occasionally prey on smaller ones, especially during times of food scarcity.

- Monitor Lizards: Large monitor lizards, such as the Komodo dragon, are known to prey on coconut crabs, particularly the smaller and less powerful ones.

- Birds of Prey: Some birds of prey, such as eagles or large hawks, may occasionally hunt coconut crabs, particularly those found on elevated surfaces or in open areas.

- Pigs and Dogs: Introduced species such as pigs and dogs have been known to prey on coconut crabs, especially when their natural habitats are disturbed or modified.

- Humans: Humans are also a significant predator of coconut crabs, hunting them for their meat, which is considered a delicacy in some cultures. Overharvesting can threaten coconut crab populations in some areas.
