What does abalone smell like when its gone bad?
When abalone has gone bad, it will have a strong, pungent odor. Some people describe the smell as being similar to ammonia, while others say that it smells like rotten fish or garbage. In either case, the smell of bad abalone is unmistakable and should be avoided.
If you're not sure whether or not abalone has gone bad, you can also check its appearance. Bad abalone will be discolored, often with a milky or yellowish appearance. It may also be slimy or have a soft texture. If you see any of these signs, it's best to discard the abalone.
