How do you bake a steak?
You can't really bake a steak in the traditional sense! Baking is typically used for items that need to be cooked through with dry heat, like cakes, cookies, and bread. Steaks, however, benefit from a high heat sear to create that delicious crust.
Here's how you can cook a steak to perfection using methods that work better than baking:
1. Pan-Searing:
* Season generously: Salt and pepper are the basics, but feel free to add herbs, spices, or even garlic powder.
* Heat a heavy pan: Cast iron or stainless steel work best. Get it super hot, then add a little oil.
* Sear: Place the steak in the pan and let it cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes per side. This creates the crust.
* Reduce heat & finish: Lower the heat, flip the steak, and cook until it reaches your desired level of doneness.
* Rest: Let the steak rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute.
2. Grilling:
* Preheat: Get your grill blazing hot.
* Season: Same as above, season generously.
* Grill: Place the steak on the hottest part of the grill. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side to create a nice sear.
* Move to indirect heat: Move the steak to a cooler part of the grill to finish cooking to your desired doneness.
* Rest: Let the steak rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.
3. Reverse Searing:
* Low & Slow: Preheat your oven to 250°F (120°C). Place the steak on a baking sheet and cook for 30-45 minutes, or until it reaches an internal temperature of about 10 degrees below your desired final temperature.
* Sear: Remove the steak from the oven and sear it in a hot pan for 1-2 minutes per side.
* Rest: Let the steak rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.
Tips for Success:
* Use a meat thermometer: The most reliable way to ensure your steak is cooked to perfection.
* Doneness Guide:
* Rare: 125-130°F (52-54°C)
* Medium Rare: 130-135°F (54-57°C)
* Medium: 140-145°F (60-63°C)
* Medium Well: 150-155°F (65-68°C)
* Well Done: 160°F (71°C) and above
